We spend around a third of our lives in bed — so keeping your sheets clean matters more than you might think. Here's how often you should wash them, and how to keep them feeling soft for years.
The simple answer: once a week
Most sleep and hygiene experts recommend washing your bed sheets once every seven days. Over a single week your sheets collect sweat, body oils, dead skin cells, and dust — all of which can affect your skin and your sleep. If you have allergies, sweat heavily, or share your bed with pets, washing every 3–4 days is even better.
How to wash sheets the right way
- Use cold or warm water — hot water can wear out fibres and fade colours faster.
- Choose a gentle cycle and wash with similar colours.
- Skip the bleach — it breaks down fabric over time.
- Tumble dry low and remove promptly to reduce wrinkles.
- Avoid overloading the machine so sheets can move and rinse fully.
The secret to sheets that stay soft
Good quality brushed microfiber sheets, like ours, actually get softer with every wash — as long as you care for them gently. Avoid fabric softener (it can leave a residue and reduce breathability) and let them dry on low heat. That's really all it takes.
When is it time to replace your sheets?
Even well-loved sheets don't last forever. If you notice thinning fabric, pilling that won't go away, or colours that have faded badly, it's probably time for a refresh. A fresh set instantly makes your whole bedroom feel new again.
